The Escazú Agreement is the first regional environmental treaty of Latin America and the Caribbean.

It contributes to the right to a healthy environment and to sustainable development of present and future generations, guaranteeing: 1) access to environmental information; 2) public participation in environmental decision-making; and 3) access to justice in environmental matters. It is the first treaty in the world to protect human rights defenders in environmental matters.

The Second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Escazú Agreement (COP 2) will bring together authorities from the region’s countries, representatives of regional and international organizations and members of the public, on April 19-21 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
